There will come a time in the life of every young man when he realizes how much effort has been expended by others in his behalf. For some, this will be the clearest evidence yet that he is growing up…. moving from immaturity to adulthood.
For me… I remember one day when I was only 12. I was making about my 10th trip up a very long and steep trail. I was hauling water and wood and equipment up to an Order of the Arrow ceremony site. I was hot… dead tired… feeling sorry for myself… asking myself why I was doing this! A thought came to me out of the blue… others had done the same for me! I didn’t even know the names of the guys who did my Ordeal ceremony just a few months before!
Would all our new OA members please come forward… would our new Brotherhood member come forward… on behalf of every camper out at [scout camp name] during the coming year… Thank You for your work this weekend putting the camp in order.
Would our Elangomats, lodge and chapter officers and ritual team member please stand up. You who have just completed your Ordeals and Brotherhood Service… know that these, your brother members, have worked tirelessly on your behalf. Know that the best way to thank them is to follow their example… be of service to others! Good Night Scouts!
